Short answer: A typical semi truck with a 53-foot trailer is roughly 70 to 80 feet long, depending on the tractor. To park it comfortably you need a space about 75 feet long and 12 to 13 feet wide, plus room in front to swing in and back up. That’s why Mile Marker Parking’s truck spaces are 75 feet long.
How Long Is a Semi Truck?
| Vehicle | Approximate length |
|---|---|
| Day cab tractor (no sleeper) | About 20–25 ft |
| Sleeper cab tractor | About 25–30 ft or more |
| Standard dry van or reefer trailer | 53 ft |
| Tractor + 53-foot trailer | About 70–80 ft |
| Box truck (straight truck) | About 20–34 ft overall |
| Standard car parking space (for comparison) | About 18 ft |
Lengths vary by make, model, sleeper size and how the fifth wheel is set. Measure your own rig before reserving a space.
How Wide Should a Truck Parking Space Be?
Trailers are typically about 8.5 feet wide, and mirrors add more. A space around 12 to 13 feet wide leaves room to open doors, walk around the rig and pull in without clipping the truck next to you. Our Fayetteville spaces are 13 feet wide, and our Hope Mills spaces are 12.5 feet wide.
Don’t Forget Turning and Backing Room
Space length is only half the story. A tractor-trailer needs a wide aisle to swing into a space and room to back in straight. Tight lots with short aisles lead to jackknifing, scraped trailers and damaged equipment. When you compare truck parking, ask how wide the drive aisles are and whether you can pull through or will need to back in.
What Size Space Do You Need?
- Tractor + 53-foot trailer: a 75-foot space
- Trailer only: a 75-foot space gives room to drop and hook comfortably
- Bobtail tractor: fits in a 75-foot space; some short day cabs fit a 30-foot space
- Box truck, work truck or pickup with a trailer up to 30 feet: a 30-foot space (Hope Mills)
